Concentration Camps “Concentration camps are camps which people are detained or confined, usually under harsh conditions and without regard to legal norms of arrest and imprisonment that are acceptable in a constitutional democracy.” In this essay it will be talking about how each “detention” or concentration camp was started. It will also be talking about the force of labor and how it affected the organization of the camps, and even extermination camps. Killing methods will also be mentioned because of the dramatic impact it had on the Jews. Elie Wiesel will be talked about as well because it will be a big help to understand his experience of being in the camp.

The Jews were put into large groups like a herd of animals and the authorized Nazi would close the door and either the exhaust gas would go in like the Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka camps would do or poisonous gas would go in of the form of Zyclon B or A like the Majdanek and Auschwitz – Birkenau would do. One other method would be the use of gas trucks. In the Chemmo camp they would use gassing trucks. Jews, later being driven within the trucks, exhaust gas would be led in. The third method was mass murder shooting of the Jews. In Majdanek camp, a mass shooting of the Jews occurred, on November 3, 1943. More than 17,000 Jews were murdered. It was called the Erntefest (‘harvest feast’). By the end of it more than 40,000 Jews were killed. The men were the first to be put in the gas chambers but before the women were put there they had to have their hair cut off, then they were put to their death. One other method of death was to have the Jews or other prisoners work to death or if unable to work – women, children and the old - they were to be shot in the “camp hospital.” The ones able to work had to carry the bodies to the crematoria and search each of the bodies carried for
