I’ve got a god awful habit that I just can’t seem to shake. In my family, nail biting could be considered hereditary. Everyone in my family bites their nails, even my 4 year old cousin Elias has been plagued with this monster, and for reasons that were unknown until this assignment came up. As a child, my mother was always so hypocritical of me biting my nails, always claiming that I was going to have a huge ball of nails in my stomach. Being a easily fascinated child, her words had the opposite effect and only drove me to bite my nails even more because I mean a huge ball of nails in my stomach sounded pretty awesome. When I am at work and a customer yells at me, I start biting; when I’m in chemistry and I have no idea what is going on, my hand meets my mouth; taking an exam and can’t quite seem to figure out the correct answer, time to get chomping. To put this in classical conditioning terms: The unconditioned stimulus (UCS) if feeling stressed or nervous, the unconditioned response (UCR) is biting my nails, the conditioned stimulus (CS) is when I’m working, taking an exam or in class, and the conditioned response is biting my nails in response to being at work or in class. Based off of the data I collected, the number of times I would bite my nails slowly decreased, with a peak only while taking exams, as the days went on and now it has stopped completely. It is really crazy to think of how many time I really bite my nails a day. I set my goal at three check marks a day. If I was unable to receive those three checks I used a negative punishment, which meant I could not have a piece of pumpkin or apple pie. Due to this experiment taking place over Thanksgiving break, I figured that was a great choice in punishment. If I was able to get three check marks in the day, I would reward myself with a piece of pie. I say this was a genius idea because it sure did help me stop biting my nails. The first day was the only day I was unable to achieve my goal and let me tell you how devastating it was to watch my mom and brother enjoy a piece of pie. I’m very proud that I was able to accomplish such a goal because it is really hard to kick this
