The Effects Of Carbon Dioxide On The Environment And Society Essay
Carbon dioxide, chemical formula CO2, is a natural compound composed of two oxygen atoms connected to a single carbon atom. It is constantly being exchanged in nature, between the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface through many microorganisms, plants, and animals in their lives’ behaviors. The process tends to balance; however, since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have contributed colossal amounts of carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere (Kolbert 2006).
CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas that occupied about 82% of all greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. The main human activity that emits CO2 is the combustion of fossil fuels, especially for energy and transportation. Accounting for 38% of total CO2, combustion of fossil fuels to generate electricity is the largest source of emission (EPA 2014).
