Bullying is an issue that has a negative affect in the education of a student 's life and must be stopped. It can cause a student to have lower grade, and have lower attendance rates. It can also make students feel hopeless and useless in the future. Bullying can cause students to want to drop out of school and consider suicide. Bullying can cause the victim to start doing drugs and smoking to get rid of their stress. Teachers and staff who are in school and witness bullying usually never pay attention to it until it is too late. The bully can also have problems with his education. 30% of high school students who both bullied others and were bullied themselves smoked pot, only 13% of students not involved in bullying did so (Promises). Alcohol and drugs seem like a good way for victims of bullying to escape their problems (Promises). Alcohol and drugs also lead to depression for students who are being bullied.
Teachers who witness bullying usually do not do anything about it. 64 percent of children who were bullied did not report it; only 36 percent reported the bullying. (Petrosina, Guckenburg, DeVoe, and Hanson, 2010) Students reported that the most harmful things teachers can do are: tell the student to solve the problem themselves, tell the student that the bullying wouldn’t happen if they acted differently, ignored what was going on, or tell the student to stop tattling. Cyber bullying can cause a student to be humiliated online and feel embarrassed to come to school. Students who are cyberbullied will consider suicide. Schools should educate students on how cyber bullying works and when to tell an adult that they are being bullied. Parent should be aware of their children 's online activity so that they can see if they are being harassed and even prevent their child from being cyber bullied.
