Little Billy is strolling through the playground with the money his mom gave him for lunch. He is planning on purchasing a cheeseburger with carrot sticks and ranch. Suddenly, Hank, the notorious bully of the grade school, started marching his way. Trembling in fear, Billy had no choice but to relinquish his money so Hank could eat lunch. Billy cried for a while, despairing that he had no money left over. This classic example of bullying as a young kid resonates with people who are becoming aware of the bullying which occurs on the daily.

Research done by the United States Health and Human Services states that kids who are bullied are more likely to acquire depression, anxiety, and even health problems. They also claim that the bullies themselves are more prone to alcohol and drug abuse, early sexual activity, and even criminal records. Another major element concerning bullying, stated by the majority of sources, is increased rates of suicide for those bullied. Statistics that show that suicide is the third largest cause of mortality in young people. Bullying may have negative side effects such as: suicidal thoughts, drugs and alcohol abuse, and depression. There are plenty of negative side affects to bullying, and studies show these results, but many of these things happen whether or not the kid is bullied. Being bullied can teach us crucial lessons in life. One such lesson is to rely on the friends we have in order to help us through tough times; since we cannot look after everything on our own, learning from a young age to communicate with others is a meaningful skill to have. Another lesson is learning how to react when experiencing difficulty. Many of the kids we have now experience “emotional trauma” from the things written in chalk. Being bullied builds up resistance to negative effects of insignificant things. I am not condoning bullying, and still believe that negative and harmful side effects are linked to it. However, I believe that bullying is not completely useless and should be examined more
