To many artificial environments seem natural. When humans go back into nature, it is like what happened to Lasn’s family, our “senses are so deadened from disuse” (Lasn, 170). We can see the effects of natural environments on the Indian children and people. They have a deep respect for the world, while for us, “even wilderness is seen as having value only as it enhances and serves our human lives, our human world” (Hogan, 145). It is shameful that we as humans only see nature for the money it can make us. Technology has had a big impact on all of this. We do not depend on nature to the same degree as we did in past. Humans used to spend much of their time in the natural world interacting with nature and others. Today we interact with others on the Internet in our artificial environments. We are becoming distant from nature and the natural world. “But the Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans, too” (Standing Bear, 149).
