Alcohol consumption among adults has varying statistics base on gender, social class, previous addictions, family alcohol use, and so on. Whites and Hispanics tended to be on the higher side, while African Americans and Asians Americans were on the lower side of alcohol consumption. It was also noted that affiliation in religious activities lowered the likelihood of alcohol consumption of African Americans, but not in whites. There can be many reasons for the difference in stress related alcohol consumption in ethnicities. However, that is a subject that I feel needs further research. Those who saw their parents cope with alcohol were more likely them self to cope with stress by using alcohol. Another important factor in research was snowball effect. Large amounts of stress seemed to be related to higher amounts of alcohol consumption. Then the alcohol consumption appeared to lead to psychological distress and in return more stress. This leads researchers to believe that there needs to be specific programs that help individuals deal with stress based on their gender, ethnicity, and background so they can apply coping methods before the snowball affect begins. While looking at adults who had previously abuse alcohol, researchers found that those adults were more likely to relapse under stress. Their way of coping with their heightened stress, is finding comfort in their past habit of comfort.
With all of these varying factors involved, gathering a random sample that represents the population can be hard. Does this sample include enough of each gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class, previous abusers, and people who either came from or didn’t come from an alcohol coping family?
