Acid rain is found all over the world as a result of the release of chemicals from burned fossil fuels, which has sources from nature and human-made. These chemicals are blamed for the causing environmental deterioration and detrimental effects to human health. The Environmental Protection Agency has enacted laws and regulations to prevent and reduce the effects of acid rain including the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the Acid Rain Program. Other technologies and initiatives have been created to increase public awareness in order to further reduce the effects of acid rain. Since its inception, there have been significant reductions in emissions and improved air quality.
What is acid rain? It is more accurately known as acid deposition.

Pollution control equipment such as wet scrubbers control emissions from coal and oil combustion from energy and industrial production bring waste gases in contact with a sorbent that reacts and absorbs the sulfur dioxide. Another option is changing the way power plants burn coal and fossil fuels to reduce the nitrogen oxide created from the combustion. Methods to help mitigate nitrogen oxide emissions from cars is by the use of catalytic converters attached to the exhaust system that transform NO2 and carbon monoxide into CO2 and water. The Clean Air Act encourages the development and sale of alternative sources of fuel used for transportation. Fuels such as natural gas, ethanol, biofuel, and propane burn cleaner than gasoline and diesel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions (US Legal, n.d.). In addition, the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind power, batteries, and hydro-electricity can be used in place of fossil fuels to produce electricity and power machinery and equipment. Lastly, reducing the consumption of energy used by people and in people’s homes include replacing old appliances with new efficient, Energy Star rated models, installing insulation to regulate a homes temperature, replacing light bulbs with LEDs, turning off lights when leaving a room, unplugging computers and phone chargers when not being used, car-pooling, and use of public transportation are all easy, direct methods in decreasing emissions (Rinkesh,
