The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI) has done several studies on abortion in the United States. There are two studies that include the year 1987 and 2004 where a total of 3,900 women who had taken a survey and were also obtaining abortions. In the United States, there are 9 out of 10 abortions that are performed during the first trimester, which is the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Most are usually done within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy. Not very many abortions are done after 16 weeks because of the delay and size of the fetus. In most cases, an abortion after 16 weeks requires an abortion specialist, which is not likely done in certain areas in the United States. According to the United States Court case of Roe vs. Wade in 1973, it was ruled that an unborn child is not a legal person for it has no rights or any protection under the constitution law. A fetus is not considered a person until it takes its first breath out of the womb. In the common law, a person is not considered a person until it is born alive. A punishment a woman received in an illegal abortion was less then committing an actual murder. It would only be a misdemeanor (Arthur, 2001). The fetus is not also considered to be a legal person. Pro-choice supports the rights and privacy a women has, especially when it comes to her own body. It shouldn’t subject to government’s regulation when a woman decides to have an abortion because it is her own reproductive system. For example, a mother could not take the proper measures into taking care of the unborn fetus. Such as prenatal care, she can also endanger her unborn children with drug abuse. We can agree that fetuses can become human beings, but we can’t say that they are. Many differences come from a human being and a fetus. The exact moment of life isn’t always clear; therefore abortion shouldn’t be considered murder. Since the embryo would still be dependent on the mother’s body for survival, it is not a viable life in its own right.
In an argument, if it wasn’t for abortion, more welfare-eligible babies will be born, also meaning increasing our tax cost. Not only the United States, but the world also is suffering from over population. People on the pro-choice side who are for abortion, believe that it will reduce the number of “unfit” people who reproduce (Crum & McCormack, 1992).
