There are so many different texts that are out there. “Our Secrets” by Susan Griffin is a transcultural text. A contact zone is the space in which transculturation takes place. Mary Pratt defines “Transculturation as a process whereby members of subordinated or marginal groups select and invent from materials transmitted by a dominant metropolitan culture” (323). Pratt uses “transcultural” to describe the dominant groups or cultures because there are so many groups and cultures that are dominant in this world.…
Human Development Writing Project: Media Analysis Today there are many different theories and perspectives on the how’s, what’s and why’s of human development. With so many theories out there it is hard to tell which one is an accurate portrayal in terms of the research that is being done. However, on the other hand one could say that with so many theories out there it is easier to find information in order to further one’s research. The first step in looking for human development research should be knowing what the base for one’s research is.…
Omar Romero Mrs. Love Hilliard Multicultural Literature and Film 30 September 2016 The Universal Culture It does not matter the color of skin, the language spoken,or the background, every family has problems. This actuality is made lucid through Gurinder Chadha’s scenes in the film What’s Cooking?…
The television show that I chose to watch was The Office. It is a sitcom that is a “documentary” about a paper company called Dunder Mifflin in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The characters that I chose to analyze are Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), and Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Dwight Schrute works at Dunder Mifflin as a sales representative. He wears the same type of clothes everyday, a mustard-colored dress shirt, dark tie, and a brown suit jacket.…
At the beginning of last semester, I started watching Shameless. Shameless, created by Paul Abbott and developed by John Wells, stars William Macy and Emmy Rossum. The series is successfully able to interpolate its audience and is successfully able to relate to people. The series focuses on many issues within the Gallagher family and messages can easily be perceived through interpolation, cultural analysis, queer analysis, rhetoric and Stuart Hall’s Encoding and Decoding essay. The “Just as the Pilgrims Intended” episode brings out a lot of these theories.…
Regardless of the alcohol she consumed, it still wasn’t right. Yet, what I find even more shocking is how the detectives handled this case. They take a statement from Kelsey Belnap and are immediately skeptical of her story. To me, they seemed to treat her as if she was at fault because she was drunk. This as another example of how gender is institutionalized, and brings inequality.…
How many female stereotypes have you heard of? How about their role in the workplace? The Office, an American sitcom, has a few. There’s the extremely driven woman in authority with a heart of ice and no personal life; everyone fears her, but in reality, she is an emotional mess. Or the passive, kind, maternal, reliable worker who everyone loves and never challenges authority to success.…
The TV series Shameless is based on working class family that lives on the South Side of Chicago. The show is based off the dramatic and chaotic life of the Gallagher family. The family of six children depend on the oldest sister, Fiona, to take care of the family due to the absence of the mother and their incapable alcoholic father who comes and goes as he pleases. The unstable family has to cope with the struggles faced with little money and learn how to take care of themselves and also each other. In this paper, I claim that the show Shameless represents the stereotypical ideas of the poor class through the main character Frank Gallagher, for he is portrayed as a lazy, alcoholic father involved with criminal activities.…
While speaking to Eva Longoria it became quite that Eva is quite different than the role she plays in Desperate Housewives, as Gabrielle Solis. Eva has graced many cover photos such as Vogue, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar, she is much more than just a beautiful women as people see her. What impressed me the most about her is that she is smart, down to earth, and outspoken. Social and political issues are her main concern which include immigration reform, labour laws for farm workers and the roles available for Latinos/Latinas in Hollywood. Eva has been getting her Master’s Degree in Chicano Studies and Political Science.…
The Real, the Bad, and the Ugly by Cassie Heidecker is an interesting example of analyzing the reality TV epidemic and in addition to the people that view it. The author starts out by listing things that go into a reality TV production and things that happen in real life in order to state that these are two different things despite the idea that reality TV is supposed to be “real”. The mundanity of real life is emphasised here vs. the idea that reality TV is scripted and has a lot of extra work put into it to make reality TV more appealing to a broader audience. The author goes on to say that real life is boring which I thought was funny and a little ironic considering that later the author mentions that she is somebody who sets aside time…
“Our Secret”, by Susan Griffin is a complex text which portrays an arrangement of themes and topics, which all relate in the end. Griffin began this chapter as she continued her life as a feminist write, poet, essayist, teacher and many more. She writes a chapter of her book that focuses on the idea of connections and how they have affected her life. The essay that will be introduced is written from her book A Chorus of Stones and is called Our Secret. It is a shocking chapter and a reflection on the consequences of others that have abused, physically or mentally or both, by committing acts of emotional violence.…
Relation Analysis of When Harry Met Sally The Social Penetration Theory As established from empirical studies, relationships do not just become; they rather developed through stages before they mature. According to the social penetration theory, interpersonal communications in the early stages are relatively shallow and somehow restrictive. As relationships grow, relations grow to get deeper and intimate (Carpenter & Greene, 2016). For instance, in the film When Harry Met Sally, the various stages of the social penetration theory become apparent. In the film, while Sally and Harry initially disliked each other after accidentally meeting after a long term, through self-discloser the two become friends.…
Gossip Girl is a television show produced by the CW, based off of a book series of the same name. It is an American teen drama set in New York Upper East Side and tells the story of privileged upper class young adults, as they battle sex, drugs, alcohol, relationships, and betrayal. The entire series is narrated by an infamous anonymous, who blogs the lives and drama of “Manhattan’s elite.” Many of the characters are frequently referred to as this, and as “Upper East Siders.” Gossip Girl has many of the problems seen in most television shows about high schools.…
QUESTION 2: Modern television dramas can reinforce and/or subvert dominant ideologies. Discuss this statement with reference to one television drama series you have studied. Television dramas have the power to represent versions of reality, both subverting and normalising social and cultural stereotypes. The law drama series Suits (2011) reinforces the dominant ideologies of inequality by sexualisation of women and promoting a misconception of men.…
