The Effectiveness of Graff
In the novel Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, Ender endures an education based primarily on quick thinking. From this, it seems that General Graff was Ender’s most effective teacher. Throughout Ender’s experiences, Graff always seems to be ready to teach Ender something new. Without General Graff, Ender would not have turned out to be the great soldier he did.
Graff's first lesson to Ender was not given to Ender in the form of a standard lesson. but taught Ender to depend upon himself. While in launch, Ender was called out for laughing by Graff who told the other launchies, “To you, I suppose it is funny. Is it funny to anybody else here? Murmurs of no. Well, why isn’t it... There’s only one boy on this launch with any brains at all, and that’s Ender Wiggins” (31,32). By doing this, Graff made all the other launchies jealous and hate Ender. This further puts Ender into a point where he must rely on himself and not others. At first, Ender was angry about the whole situation and believed Graff was out to set Ender up. However, later on, Ender is put into a situation where he needs to fight for himself. After his solo fight, Ender said to Dink, “His eyes were open, but Bonzo wasn’t thinking or moving anymore. Although Graff is prohibited from showing any affection towards Ender, Graff helps Ender in the process to change him into a leader. After every incident, Ender notices that instead of coming before, the adults always seem to come after the problem is resolved. For example, after Ender’s fight with Bonzo, where Ender heard “Behind them, they heard the heavy clatter of adults running down the ladderway. Now the teachers would come. The Medical staff” (211). This makes him feel like there aren’t any adults to rely on. This only furthers Ender’s independence and prepares him to become a
