The Effectiveness of Anti-Tobacco Advertising on Adolescents A number of studies claim that the majority of frequent smokers experienced their first cigarette by or before the age of 18. It is also true that if one has not decided to smoke tobacco by age 18, it is very likely that the individual never will. But how would one manage to progressively influence a generation of adolescents consumed with modern technology? The answer lies within the question. Anti-tobacco advertisements are necessary for the eradication of smoking in years to come. Tobacco use among society has been constant throughout history. However, it has also been accompanied by publications discouraging the popular addiction. One of the earliest instances of anti-tobacco advertising is King James I’s renowned Counterblast to Tobacco. This was an essay written by the King in 1604 expressing his aversion to the “noxious weed”. In his paper he describes smoking tobacco as, “A custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse” (James I 15). The King decided to then increase the import tax on tobacco by 4,000 % hoping to deter people from purchasing it. Another example of anti-tobacco campaigning in history occurred in Nazi Germany, after two German scientists discovered that there was a correlation between smoking and lung cancer. Smoking…
