Rise Up Who would be affected if minimum wage was raised? Who would be affected if more companies offered benefits to their employees? It is a common misconception that only young workers new to the work force would benefit from this raise, the harsh reality is that the average low wage worker is 35 years old and is often the bread-winner and sole provider for their household, this is according to an article published on EPI (Dan Essrow).These low wage jobs are affecting the United States citizens and the economy in a very negative way. Sally Steenland notes that “More and more, the face of the poor is that of mothers and fathers struggling to feed, house, clothe, and educate their children—parents who are doing their best but still aren’t getting by.”(Working Full Time and Still Poor) These employees are still dependent on Government aid and welfare. In the article “Poverty Nation: How America Created a Low Wage Work Swamp.” A study found that McDonald’s workers alone receive 1.2 billion in public aid, this is an industry, by the way, that last year earned $7.44 billion in profits, paid its top execs $52.7 million and distributed $7.7 billion in dividends and stock buyback. Still, “public benefits receipt is the rule, rather than the exception, for this Workforce.”(Joan Walsh).Why is it that even though these people have full time jobs they are still unable to provide the basic needs for themselves? Raising minimum wage is what is best for the economy. “A higher minimum wage not only increases workers’ incomes—which is sorely needed to boost demand and get the economy going—but it also reduces turnover, cuts the costs that low-road employers impose on taxpayers, and pushes businesses toward a high-road, high-human-capital model.”(David Madland).
