Introduction Do you ever wonder in the summer time why people tell you not to wear dark colors? The reason being is that dark colors absorb the more light, whereas light colors reflect light, which is why it gets so hot. The color white does not absorb any wavelength, instead it reflects them unlike the color black where it absorbs all of the light it can and reflects none. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that involves microwaves and radio waves.* The colors we see with our eyes are set apart by the wavelength that they are associated with. For example we see blue when the wavelength is between 420 – 490 nm. This follows the color wheel which shows the relationship between light absorbed and light reflected. A solution’s concentration can be determined by the intensity of the color you see as well. When you look at a substance and it has a deeper color than another of the same substance and color, then you can assume that the concentration of the deeper colored one is higher when compared to the other. For instance if you were to shine a light through both substances then you would notice that the more concentrated substance transmits less light than the less concentrated substance. The instrument used to analyze light absorbency is called a spectrophotometer. This type of instrument can calculate the concentration and absorbency of a substance. This works by taking a substance, placing it into the machine, letting the light pass through the substance, and waiting for the absorbency and concentration to be recorded. Multiple calculations were taken and plotted on a Beer’s Law Plot. A Beer’s Law Plot is the correlation between a concentration and its absorbency. The Beer’s Law Plot gives a best fit line from multiple calculations that are collected from a spectrometer during an experiment.
