Grealy forces herself to become a deep person when she comes to the realization that she doesn’t look the same as anyway else, and decides that she will not waste her time on materialistic things. This ties in with the title “Mirrorings” because she finds that you can become who you want to become and you can be perceived in different ways but the only thing that truly matters is the person you are not only in the mirror but deep down. This ties in with the theme of self-acceptance, because at the end of the essay when she truly feels the approval of a male and reassurance is when she finally finds the strength to look into a mirror and face her reflection.
5. Grealy uses her bluntness as a form of disguise to make herself feel more comfortable, and to defend herself. She feels as though if she becomes as direct about the meaning of live and what is important she can hide her physical malformation. She can escape into a world of judging other people by their way of life to feel safer in her own.
6. Throughout the essay you see contradictions in the way Grealy thinks. These are evident when she first feels that the only way to escape is to be “blunt” and to judge other people for the choices they make. You can tell that as she grows she grows out of her childish ways and into a person who is accepting of all types of people and learns that it is not about yourself that is in the reflection it is about the person you are deep
