The Effect of Bad Parenting Being a good parent is to not be selfish, take care, and look after the kids. In the case of Rose Mary the mother of Jeanette Walls, she was the complete opposite. In the story The Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls, Rose Mary was a horrible parent for her children. Even though she was around the house, she never took the time to assist them. When Jeanette was only three years old, she had to find a way to eat instead of being fed by Rose Mary. She did not care about the situation of her family, she valued herself first and made sure she had time to paint. Being a clueless mom and did not believe in rules. When Jeanette was only three years old, Rose Mary applauded her for cooking hot dogs. Jeanette and her siblings had to find food on their own when their mom and dad were out of town. When there was not food during the school year, Jeanette had to pick up untouched food from the trash cans just to eat. These types of examples show what Jeanette and her other siblings had to go through at a young age on their own just to survive. Taking the example of Jeanette cooking at a young age showed the lack of commitment from the mother but at the same time she wanted to her children to learn the value of being independent. Most kids now days would have no clue what to do if they did not have their parent on their side which in most case is crucial. Teaching children to be independent when it comes to survival of food and other cases is not good parenting. The lack of parenting from Rose Mary had allow her children to find different ways to be self-independent just to live. Although Jeanette suffered at a young age being independent, the value being independent helped her as a teen. Finding different job to provide her own income. Being able to leave Welch on her own and immediately be able to get a job, go to school and be successful in New York City. One of the three lessons Jeanette learned from her mom was appretiatiance for the arts. Rose Mary did not care about parenting. She just specified on the arts. Rose Mary was a stay at home mom who had a teaching degree but instead of helping the family out financially especially when they were homeless she still valued finishing her paintings. When Jeanette burned herself cooking, Rose Mary was painting. The importance of art was deeply instilled in Rose Mary. That’s why Jeanette always felt Rose Mary had more of a connection with her older sister Lori, who had a greater appreciation towards the arts than Jeanette. She always tried to teach her children about her paintings. Rose Mary tried to find anyway in any conversation to incorporate the topic of art.
