All of the tissues examined except for the brain tissue showed some level of responsiveness to the presence of insulin with adipose tissue shown to be the most greatly affected by a 9.88 fold increase in glucose metabolism. This was closely followed by muscle tissue with a 3 fold increase then liver tissue with a 1.87 fold increase. Brain tissue showed no change instead exhibiting a slight reduction in glucose metabolism. These results are as would be expected with adipose tissue and muscle tissue both having GLUT 4 transporters which are activated in the presence of insulin (Nelson & Cox, 2013). The fold change for liver tissue is also consistent with the actions GLUT 2 when affected by insulin, inhibiting gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis but stimulating glycogen synthesis. GLUT 1 and 3 in brain tissue are not activated by insulin hence the lack of fold change.


GLUT transporters each have distribution in different tissue with varying kinetic properties and specificity for sugar (Khan & Pessin, 2002). They act as transporters to move glucose across the cell surface forming an aqueous pore for glucose to move through (Bryant, Govers, & James, 2002). Though there are 13 know GLUT transporters with GLUT 1-4 being known as Class 1 glucose transporters (Khan & Pessin, 2002). GLUT 1 and 3 are expressed primarily in brain tissue.
