Frederick J. Kelly invented the standardized exam in the early 1900’s. After Kelly was complete with his research, he stated that the standardized exams were too crude to be used and should be abandoned. Even the inventor of the standardized exams said, that these exams are too inefficient, and the exams don’t determine a student’s knowledge. The school system relies on these exams to determine everything about a student. The education system forces students to take the ACT or SAT, which are completely standardized tests. Midterms and finals are usually in multiple choice format. The system deeply relies on an outdated system, that was used nearly a century ago. In my experience, I’ve always done better on written exams, rather than multiple choice exams. “How can a multiple choice question determine success? Most of the graduate students claim that 80% of their knowledge does not come from school, but from their own experience in life.” (Williams). The education system should have a balance of standardized exams and other types of exams. “Instead of control, competition, stress, standardized testing, screen-based schools and loosened teacher qualifications, try warmth, collaboration, and highly professionalized, teacher-led encouragement and assessment.” (Doyle) They have a better and more efficient grading system, than here in the United States. Finland only has one standardized exam. “66 percent of students go to college.” (Taylor) Finland has the highest percentage of students that are going to college. Also, many nations have either affordable or no tuition colleges. In the United States, the tuition is extremely high for many colleges; the high tuition rates are an obstacle that many students have to face. The United States education system must be modified, and the school system must learn how alternative school systems
