Stanley Lee (1962) once said “With great power, there must also come great responsibility.” Teachers hold a great power over their students and with that comes major responsibility. An educators’ duty to the students includes being fair, respectful, and encouraging. However, these are not the only responsibilities assigned to an educator. Teachers also have ethical responsibilities they must adhere to. The code of ethics and The Principles of Professional Conduct of The Education Profession in Florida outlines the disciplinary rules of which the teachers are responsible. During a past field experience, a professional educator was observed not applying the code of ethics when making the ethical decision of sharing a student’s personal information. The teacher did not seem to realize that she was violating the code of ethics but it should have been apparent that it was inappropriate to bring the topic up to someone that was not the students’ parent or guardian. When it comes to technology, educators are required to follow policies and procedures that promote the safe, appropriate, and ethical use of technology within their classrooms.
