Northern Brazil is dominated by the basin of the Amazon River, which occupies two thirds of the county, whereas southern Brazil has a large plateau called Brazilian Highlands which is 300-910m. above sea-level. Due to the country being 3.288 million mi², its climate varies from the northern part of the country to the southern part. According to The World Factbook on Brazil near the basin of the Amazon River the climate is tropical, a dry climate in areas near Fortaleza, Brazil and temperate or subtropical climate to the south of the tropic of Capricorn.
