Study Settings
The three early intervention psychosis programs included in this study are located in the province of Ontario, Canada. These programs included were: Heads Up! Early Intervention in Psychosis in Kingston, Lynx Early Intervention Psychosis Program in Peterborough, and the Leghorn Program: Early Intervention in Psychosis in Hamilton. Each program accepts young adults who have experienced their first psychotic episode. These sites were selected as they provide access to large numbers of individuals who could provide rich information about the phenomenon under investigation. In addition, these sites provided access to people in different career markets due to city size and type, and a range of vocational program types.
Early intervention psychosis programs are designed to facilitate recovery from psychotic illnesses that often arise during youth or young adulthood. These programs are designed to provide services to both clients and their families (Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, 2011). Services include comprehensive diagnostic assessment, treatment, and psychosocial support, as well as family education and support (Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, 2011). They employ a multidisciplinary team approach that integrates medical treatment, counselling, case management, substance abuse treatment, cognitive behaviour therapy, and psychoeducation for families (Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, 2011).
