The Dying Girl

I’m reading Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews and I am on page 127. Thus far this book is about Greg a senior in high school who has no friends but at the same time has a ton of friends. Then there is Earl; the only person Greg would actually call a real friend. Earl and Greg like to make movies and short films, although these movies usually are horrible. Also, there is Rachel who Greg dated at one time, but now she has cancer and they are just friends. In this journal I will be evaluating and questioning.

The lack of plot negatively affects the story. One, the lack of plot can make it hard to continue on with the story. With the lack of plot the story drags on. This causes the story to be rather dull and difficult to read. That lack of plot makes you wonder what the book is about, and when you are 126 pages in you should have some idea of what it is about. Also, they break up the plot. It goes from present day to flashback and so on. This is not necessarily good because it can be hard to remember what was going on before the plot was interrupted. They will be in present day, and then go into a flashback about his childhood, and then they are in a different setting. This can make it a little hard to remember what was going on previous to the flashback. On the other hand the flashbacks interrupting the plot adds to the story. For one, the flashbacks give more insight into Greg’s life. One way they give insight is, they give a history into his friendship with Earl. “Some observers would say our friendship is a triumph of Pittsburgh’s public school system, but I would tell you instead it’s a testament to the power of video games” (Andrews 77). This quote shows us how their friendship began. They also give insight into Greg’s dating life. The flashback told us that Greg has no dating skills. After many failed dating tactics he tells us, “During high school I didn’t even bother with girls or girl tactics” (Andrews 27).

In A Lesson Before Dying it is evident that women play an enormous role in influencing Grant and his life decisions. The women that surround Grant in A Lesson Before Dying motivate Grant to become more open to the life that he could be living. In the beginning of the book, Grant is a very stubborn man, but as the book progresses, and as he continues to visit Jefferson, there is a major shift in his attitude. He was never up for visiting Jefferson because he saw no use in “making a man” of someone who was going to die either way, but Miss Emma and Tante Lou kept on Grant about visiting Jefferson, and Grant visits him out of respect for the two women. Grant also feels a sense of obligation to prove himself to Tante Lou and Miss Emma.…

There are many different examples of flashbacks in the book which help to make the book more interesting. When readers first start to read the book they are greeted by a flashback in the beginning; Amir depicts the time twenty-six years ago when he crouches "behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek". He says he becomes what he is not at that very moment. This flashback is critical in providing essential detail and context to the book. First, this flashback presents the readers with the information that something had happened in the alley that caused Amir to become the person he is now.…

Jennifer Kent's film about the horrors of parenting has no harbinger to announce to Amelia (Essie Davis) that her world will soon be upended; she has to read the book herself to find out. Amelia is severely sleep-deprived and hopes that reading a mysterious pop-up book will put Samuel (Noah Wiseman) to sleep. The first few pages start off pretty unassuming--a character with a silly name like the Babadook lends itself to a child's story--but the warning comes quickly enough. The shy, little silhouette that accompanies the line "A friend of you and me" becomes a towering figure looms over a small drawing that looks a lot like Amelia. Each illustration is designed to lurk in the darkness, and Jennifer Kent builds on the dread by obscuring more…

Flashbacks give the readers background and details that help them better understand the characters. Use of flashback to create mystery is evident in parts one and two of the story. The first use of flashback gives the reader more insight on the nosetaker and his work as a barber, recalling the time when he was shaving the noseowner. “Ivan Jakovlevitch after taking a pinch of snuff would then, by way of reprisals, set to work to soap him on the cheek, the upper lip, behind the ears, on the chin, and everywhere.” Another example of flashback tells the reader about the noseowner and his position in the community: “But before proceeding further, we must certainly give the reader some information about Kovaloff, so that he may know what sort of a man this member of the Municipal Committee really was.”…
