The Duffer In 'The Duff' By Kody Keplinger

No matter how hard she tries, Bianca Piper never seemed to like hanging out at the local teen friendly bar. The Nest was a place for teens to let themselves loose and go crazy, but for Bianca; it was just a place to watch her friends be bombarded by boys and judge the others around her. Bianca was not known for her friendliness around the bar, but when Wesley Rush, the hottest boy in school came to talk to her, she knew something was up. Wesley called Bianca the duff of her friend group. He accused her of being the designated ugly fat friend, and Bianca was enraged by him coming up to her and saying that. The novel, The Duff, written by Kody Keplinger, is a novel about Bianca living in the shadows of her beautiful friends fighting to fit in with her high school peers. The Duff describes the issues of living as a teen and has a theme …show more content…
Bianca Piper was called the duff of her group by Wesley Rush, the hottest boy in school. Bianca’s initial reaction was depressing and she took her sadness out in ways she probably forgets. By the end of the story she found her true self and got through the struggles of being in high school. I recommend reading The Duff, especially to teenage girls, because of how effective the message that what you think of yourself matters more than the thoughts of someone else. Bianca may have let go of friendships that mattered to her dearly and gotten into a relationship that did not matter as much as normal relationships do, but she did learn more about her true self through it all. The Duff is a book that is hard to put down because of the non-stop drama and curiosity as to what is next. The readers will get through the story with Bianca and experience the pain with her because of how relatable it is. The Duff is a highly recommended book and the ending of the story sure does shock

High School is a period in adolescence where identities are found within the self by figuring out where they belong in this world. That can be hard especially for teens like Cady Heron in the 2004 movie Mean Girls directed by Mark Waters based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes which encompasses females in high school cliques and how damaging it can be for development to girls. Being home schooled by her mother her whole life, she has never experienced public school but is eager to begin what she calls “a regular teenage life”. Although she is knowledgeably prepared for what is to come academically having a strong side in math, no one could prepare her for the social culture that is deeply but sometimes dramatized rooted in high school.…

It shows the strength and resilience of a seemingly normal teenage girl, all while being lighthearted and witty. More often than not, we become blind to how diverse we all are, and a ‘normal’ person can be disregarded. In A Mango-Shaped Space, we see that a regular teenager has a big secret, and we wouldn’t even know that just by taking a glance. If this book were chosen for the Little Free Library, I believe that it will strongly encourage students at Pembroke Meadows to go out and change their perspective on things, and it may even reveal true…
