Released in 2008, The Duchess was dated back in the 18th century when the Duchess of Devonshire struggles with being a woman ahead of her time. Georgiana married at a young age to a man misdirected by, her mother, Lady Spencer that the Duke of Devonshire loved her even though they briefly met. To her surprise she found out quickly that was not the case, the Duke only wanted the marriage for her to bear him an heir. The Duke punished her shortcomings of bearing a son by having several affairs, and wanting her to raise one of his daughters out of wedlock. She battles with being one of the most influential woman of her time with her being a fashion trend setter and being a central figure of the Whig party, were everyone loves her except her husband.

Grey returned her feelings she decided to compromise with her husband, which tragically did not end well. As the Duke, Bess, and the Duchess sit at the breakfast table, Georgina offered to give her blessing over their relationship, if she can in turn have an affair with Thomas Grey that would make her happy. In the film, the Duke barbarously refused her deal by stating “I don't make deals. Why would I? I am in charge of it all.” Even when Bess tried to justify Georgina’s deal, the Duke told her to shut up. Georgina left the table upset, the Duke chased after her and raped her. In my opinion, the reason Georgina tries to make the arrangement is to make everyone equally happy instead of going behind the Duke’s back. That is not how things were handled back in 18th century as long as the men are happy everyone else does not matter. After, bearing a son, Georgina started an affair with Thomas Grey despite the Duke’s orders. A love affair that was cut short when the Duke confronts her about it. He gave Georgina a choice end the affair or never sees her kids again. In the end, Georgina give up her affair with Thomas and their love child to be with her three girls and son. It wasn't an uncommon thing for them men to use their children as pawns to get their wife to do as they are told. Even though Georgina struggled with wanting freedom with the patriarchy in her life, she was willing to give it all up to be a good mother to her
