There is something quite admirable about a person committed to something greater than themselves. Whether it be to a religion, philosophy, cause or another person; the personal sacrifices that are made to stay true to this personal mission are all the same. Many may wonder if it differs between men or women, people of certain occupations, relationship status or ones sexual desires but often it does not. All people who make a choice to commit to something make similar sacrifices. This is seen in the two characters, Margery Kempe and Lanval, as described in the Book of Margery by Margery Kempe and Lanval by Marie de France.…

On November 22nd , 2015 , I had attended a play “A servant of Two masters” that played downtown Pittsburgh at the O’Reilly theater, the play was directed by Ted Pappas. He had put together a creative and intriguing play, having actors stay spontaneous and interact with the audience, therefore no parts would be found boring nor dry. All the actors had held up their end of their roles quite well, by fully disguising themselves as that character they were suppose to be during the entire play. In the play “A Servant of Two masters” is about a girl Clarice who originally had an arranged marriage but was called off due to her fiancé death, who was Federigo Rasponi of Turin.…

Babo and the slaves are seen as the incarnation of the evil that Delano’s blithe innocence and ignorance even in his concluding talk with Cereno, refuse to see. Then, there is the reaction of the Spaniards when the slave ship was retaken. The Spaniards desire to impose the kind of violence they suffered at the hands of recaptured slaves designates the skeptical nature of violence when the positions of slave and master are reversed. If the story shows that slavery breeds ugly passion in man, it remains much more reserved in typifying Babo and the slaves.…

From the very beginning of her marriage she intends to inform her brothers of the ceremony, albeit at some later point in time, hence her optimism as she reassures Antonio that her brothers will eventually approve of their marriage: “Yet should they know it, time will easily / Scatter the tempest” (1.1.472-3). Additionally, the Duchess marries Antonio purely for love. She describes him in this scene saying, “And I must tell you, / If you will know where breathes a complete man - / I speak it without flattery - turn your eyes, / And progress through yourself” (1.1.435-38). Similarly, Antonio says of her, “Let all sweet ladies break their flattering glasses / And dress themselves in her” (1.1.204-5) describing her as the picture of perfect virtuous womanhood. This demonstrates that although Antonio is socially inferior, they are perfectly suited for each other and their mutual attraction is founded upon their respective personal excellence.…

Madame de Lafayette examines the theme of jealousy stemming from self-love in her novel, The Princess of Cleves. This idea of self-interested jealousy was studied by multiple intellects of the time, including Thomas Hobbes and Francois de La Rochefoucauld. These men greatly contributed their ideas to the incredibly introspective age of the 1600s, illustrating the idea that the actions a person takes in everyday life are fundamentally ingrained in their own self-interest. Despite being self-motivated, these jealous actions are counterproductive and result in the inability for a person to be satisfied and happy. Madame de Lafayette proves in her revolutionary psychological novel, The Princess of Cleves, that jealousy is a dangerous and destructive…

Readers tend to be quick to judge characters without first considering all the relevant information. In Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, Madame Defarge is often thought of as a ruthless villain who is willing to use any means to satisfy her desire for vengeance. However, her willingness to combat injustice around her with force does not justify her classification as a villain. In actuality, Madame Defarge, while she is by no means a perfect person, has good reasons for her actions and fights for a noble cause, but her circumstances necessitate that she use unappealing methods.…
