The Drive-Personal Narrative

The man, Tim traveled along a dusty track in his aged, beaten SUV. Tim was a tall man, with unkept hair and a scarred and weather beaten face. His complexion, was tanned from working and living in a semi-desert. The voice he carried was rather rough, probably from living in harsh conditions most of his life. Originally, the SUV he drove was white, but a life of living in a semi-desert like its owner had worn some of the paint away and the rest of the car was covered with rust. Tim based on appearance and speech was usually regarded as an outcast or an outlaw, but in reality he worked as a rancher and farmer.

As Tim continued along the track towards his ranch, minding his own business, he noticed a several vultures circling a point near

Then, Tim got into the driver's seat and started to drive to his house.

As they were driving, Tim quizzed,”How did you end up in the gully?”

The boy answered,”Well from what I remember, I was riding my horse to my uncle's ranch, when it started to get really windy, so I directed my horse towards the gully. As I reached the edge of the gully, it was deeper than I expected. I rode along the edge towards the track, until suddenly the ground under the horse started to shake and slip. I think the horse bucked me off its back because the last thing I remember is flying through the air then a lot of blackness.”

As the boy finished his tale, he drifted to sleep, while Tim continued bouncing down the rutted track.

Tim nodded knowingly, then looked at the sky and muttered,”Well dang it, I don't like the look of those clouds.”

Several minutes later, the rain started. It started gently, but soon progressed to biblical levels. After an hour of driving through the torrent, the road turned into a mud soup, making it very challenging for Tim to travel. Eventually, the road became impassible and forced Tim to

Several hours later the child questioned,”Why have we stopped?”

Tim replied,”I think you can hear the reason.”

The boy was quiet for a moment then exclaimed,”Oh, the downpour made you stop.”

Once morning finally arrived the rain started turning into a bright morning. Tim clambered into the middle of his SUV and found some food which he shared with his temporary companion.

Instead of starting the instant after breakfast, Tim decided to wait several hours for the ground to dry. While waiting, Tim told several tales from his life to keep the child entertained.

Just before lunch, Tim started the car and carefully began the journey home. Just before dinner time, Tim arrived at his ranch with the boy asleep once again. He unloaded the supplies he purchased, then carried the boy into a spare bedroom and started preparing dinner. The boy woke up just after dinner was finished being prepared.

After dinner, Tim asked,”Do your parents or uncle have any phones?”

The boy responded,”Yes.”

Tim handed him a phone and commanded,”Call your family and inform them you are
