At the age of eighteen our children are recognized as adults and given the right to serve in the military, vote in an election or buy cigarettes yet they cannot legally purchase or consume alcohol. Currently there are several groups trying to get the state of Texas to lower the drinking age from twenty-one down to eighteen years of age. Many questions that if the drinking age is lowered, will the statistics change regarding drinking and driving or drinking in general. Kids are not as mature as they are at the age of twenty-one especially when it comes to drinking, which impairs their mental state; therefore, the drinking age should not be lowered. As parents, we prepare our children to grow up to be responsible adults capable of making good decisions so they can make something of their life. However, outside factors such as peer pressure can have an even stronger influence on our children. Children have to deal with peer pressure all throughout school and it is worse today than in the past. We need to understand what they are going through and to help them make the best choices in any situation that develops. We should not add the confusion by letting them drink in their teenage years; whether it’s at a party with some friends or at home under watchful eyes.
