But on the other hand, there is a con to every pro. Traci Toomey and coauthors stated the following in their article:
With evidence that lower legal drinking ages were associated with more traffic crashes among youth, citizens advocacy group led a movement to restore the MLDA to 21 in all states. In response, 16 States increased their MLDA between September 1976 and January 1983.
In this case, the lower drinking age actually was causing more traffic crashes because more teens were drinking and driving. The result of this was sixteen states increasing the drinking age to save lives. Carrying on with the United States law, one stated, "The current law, passed in all 50 states in the 1980 's, was intended to diminish the number of traffic deaths caused by young drunk drivers” (“Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered from 21 to a Younger Age?”). Interesting, men who increased their alcohol consumption somewhat seemed to lower their coronary risk." Clearly, alcohol has some positive aspects when consuming it. The positive attribution is that drinking can actually lower coronary risk which helps the heart. Others feel differently about drinking helping the heart. One stated, "If the doctors started counseling patients to drink for the sake of coronary benefits, the result might instead be an increase in deaths from cancer, traffic accidents, liver problems, and so on" (“Can Drinking Help the Heart”). Is alcohol really not helping the heart? Alcohol might actually be causing other problems rather than helping the heart. Death is a serious consequence. But as seen here, drinking is only harmful when drinking out of moderation. Studies can be done to get the real evidence. From the article “Can Drinking Help the Heart?” one stated the
