Taney wanted to dispel the rebelling slaves and Anti-Slavery groups. He wanted the ruling to keep the states together instead of have a Civil War start. This had the opposite effects, however, because it sparked resentment and hatred between the Anti-Slavery groups and the Pro-Slavery groups. They also could not work in post offices from the result of Congress passing a law proclaiming only White males that are free can work there. With Taney 's ruling in the Dred Scott affair all cases were treated the same. The Blacks were not considered to be citizens and the state citizenship granted to some Black men were not even considered in the federal courts. With White and Black men competing for jobs squabbles broke out amongst them. The Black men would have jobs as blacksmiths or other skilled occupation and charge less than the White men. This occurring caused laws to be put in place to protect the White laborers. White people feared that the Blacks would take all the jobs and that the competition would outmatch them. There was a loss of social status if Whites are companions with the Blacks. They were wanted for servitude and other menial jobs. The abolitionists would offer housing, protection, and food for the Black runaway slaves. One abolitionist whose name was Harriet Beecher wrote a book called Uncle Tom 's Cabin. This book portrays the life of slaves and the hardships they had to endure. Another abolitionist was named Garrison, he wrote a newspaper titled the Liberator. Garrison and several others created an Anti-Slavery society in which they declared slavery to be sinful against humans, frowned upon prejudiced, and tried to promote nonviolent protest. The woman’s rights movement had also spurred women into helping this cause because both groups were oppressed by the same people. However, the women had a little more leniency in the way they were treated. The Black women had it the worst in this whole affair because they were treated like cattle and had zero rights being among these two groups. White men liked to take advantage of them by molesting and working them to death. Many women participated in the Anti-Slavery society to give support when needed.
