Pluralism In A Utopian Society

It can sometimes seem that the dream of a perfect society never dies. As human beings throughout history, we have always embraced the challenge of creating the ideal system so that a large group of people can live as one in loving harmony. Nevertheless, history has shown that this is incredibly hard. Even the most sophisticated and powerful civilizations eventually collapse. From the Mayans to the Roman Empire, there always seems to be a glitch in the matrix, a missing piece in the system that opens the opportunity for great failure. Even though this is a common theme in history, we keep trying, innovating and chasing after this dream of a Utopian society. For example, it can be the idea that people can coexist in harmony together no matter the differences. Weather is sexual preference, religious belief or race, a balance can be established. Another aspect of pluralism is that instead of the power being placed on one individual, it is spread amongst different groups. That is why is for the people, by the people. One of the greatest benefits of pluralism, is that no one person is in control. Every major move forward is created by the collective efforts of a large group of people. This diminishes the chances of the human flaws of an individual such as biased, anger, jealousy and racism because the power is no longer in one hand, but the hands of many. Dictatorships tend to be dangerous because it only takes one bad leader. Only one person can determine the fate of a nation. There have been good dictatorships with good leaders, but since it only takes one leader, there have also been numerous bad ones such a Hitler or Hasina who were certainly not offering freedom as a …show more content…
In the United States, people are free to practice their religion no matter what it is or what it consists of. All these people with different faiths work, study, eat and live by each other’s side. I have the personal privilege of living in a place like this. I meet friends with different backgrounds who all have an interesting story to tell when it comes to what their believes are. It is nice to be able to learn about so many different world views which every individual has. This religious freedom is deep within the roots of the United States because it is one of our amendments. The first amendment of the U.S. constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (Cornell). It is pretty clear here how serious freedom was considered. The importance of having the freedom to believe in what you desired was a factor that was considered when the first amendment was written. This same freedom of religion, in my opinion, is the greatest force that pushes the diversity of the united states
