The Drawer Boy Character Analysis

Every person has unique characteristics and traits while resembling personalities of another person. No two people are exactly alike, hence the use of similarities and differences to describe their behaviours and demeanor. The character Morgan from the play The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey, and Hester from the play Still Stands the House by Gwen Pharis Ringwood, obtain similarities, however if closely examined, they do differ. Morgan and Hester react comparably when acquiring change, yet when coping with it, Morgan and Hester deal with it contrarily.

To begin with, Morgan came to the realization that he would have to tell Angus the truth, as Angus was relentless. After Angus heard Miles say to Morgan, “What you tell him isn’t true”, Angus confronted Morgan and as a result, he had to tell him the truth. He explained to Angus, “He means I lied. I lied to you”(Healey 51). Morgan handled the situation like a mature adult would. He knew the lies could not go any further, so he calmly admitted to Angus that he had lied for a very long time. Morgan thought out his decision and did not act out of impulse. On the other hand, Hester deals with her situation immaturely and comes to an irrational decision. Instead of accepting change as Morgan did, Hester turns to the worst-case scenario. Hester began to execute her plan of eliminating Ruth and her brother by lying to Ruth saying she will fill the lantern, “She hesitates and looks for a long moment after Ruth. With strange lucidity of madness, slowly, deliberately, she places the top back again on the can and, moving behind the table, sets it on the floor without filling the lantern.”(Ringwood 16). Hester became so caught up in her unwilling desire to move so she acted out of selfishness to prevent her from ever having to move.
