Ambition destroys common sense and human decency. The coach of the Patriots, “[Bill] Belichick had opponent’s defensive signals videotaped, contrary to explicit National Football League roles; [Marion] Jones admitted taking illegal drugs around the 2,000 Olympics; and [William] Lerach pleaded guilty to illegally hiring plaintiffs as fronts for filing suits against companies.” (Samuelson The Downside of Ambition). All of these acts were a direct result of being overly ambitious. They tried to lie and cheat to get what they want. Malala Yousafzai, one of the youngest winners of the Nobel Peace Prize in history, is known for being a prominent activist in the fight for equal education for all. She explains that “One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.” (Yousafzai Speech at the Youth Takeover of the U.N., July 12, 2013). Malala strives for a day when there are equal opportunities for everyone to receive an education. She is stating that it is impossible to be achieved unless everyone also has that ambition and drive to achieve her goal. Malala’s ambition gave her the inspiration and bravery to speak out in front of hundreds about what she believes. When she attended the Youth Takeover of the United Nations, she stated that after she was shot in the head by the Taliban that her, “Weakness, fear, and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.” (Yousafzai Speech at the Youth Takeover of the U.N., July 12, 2013). She is honored for her ambitious spirit, but no one stops to think about how she could have died and some of her own friends did die because of what she believed in. Another great man was killed by his closest friends as a direct result of his ambition. The great Julius Caesar was, quite literally, stabbed in the back: “Only at the end of his life, at the height of his power, did hubris, ego, and the daggers of his assassins converge to destroy him.” (Forbes and Prevas Power, Ambition, and Glory: The Stunning Parallels Between Great Leaders of the Ancient World and today...And What You Can Learn). Due to his ambition, his friends became fearful of his growing power and decided the only way to stop Caesar was killing him. His ambition is what gave him his greatness, but
