Macbeth is a greedy, power thirsty, jealous man who has a heart as cold as ice. His greed for power leads him to killing his own best friend (banquo) just to keep the scottish crown, but to claim the crown he had to kill Duncan the king of scotland who also happened to be his cousin. Not to mention he was already the thane of cawdor and the thane of glamis. But soon the guilt hits macbeth as does thirst for power.
Macbeth's downfall is associate to a sense of overconfidence and unchecked greed. Lady macbeth once receiving the letter begins to assist macbeth's mind about the murder of the king. Lady macbeth is really the main cause to macbeth's guilt and greed. Macbeth allows lady macbeth to manipulate him by accusing him of not being a man and expresses that she would kill her own baby to fulfil her desire of being queen. “I have given a suck, and know how tender`tis to love the babe that milks me: i would, while its was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, and dash'd the brains out, had sworn as you had done this”. Even Though macbeth is a strong man mentally and physically he still doesn't put a stop to the murder, but his consequences warn him of his downfall. Instead of listening to his conscience macbeth he abolishes his guilt and continues with his ambition. Even his mind is intoxicated with the thoughts of murder, which directs him to the king's room where he shall do the “dirty deed”. “ is this a dagger i see before me, with the handle towards my hand?
