Very little is known about the country prior to the early 1800s when African Americans started immigrating to Liberia. What is known is that Liberia had a lot of resources and their economy attracted many including the Europeans that came earlier on. The French and Portuguese stopped in Liberia just because of trade and resources. The main attraction was specifically, but not only, the “grain coast.” It is said that the history of Liberia truly began with the American Colonization Society (ACS) that was formed in 1816. The ACS was formed with the intentions of sending freed slaves back to Africa so that they could find true freedom.
