Primarily, a main component of Thomas Hobbes theory, is the idea that followers by nature, are selfish and only concerned with their own self-preservation, and thus followers need leaders and government to maintain social order. An example of human selfishness in “The Painted Door” happens when Ann is alone to her thoughts. Ann has just gone back to painting the door after veiwing the storm outside her window, and Ann is considering her life with John and how John treats her. Although John treats Ann respectfully, and gives Ann everything that she could ask for, Ann feels vindicated about John’s need to take care of other people, and Ann feels that as John’s wife, it is John’s duty to take care of her, and not others, like his father. While Ann knows her thoughts about John are “just an effort to convince herself that [Ann] did have a…

In this passage from the text, we get our first look into some of the main themes of the book, starting with the social and political themes. We can see that there is a corrupt system in place, where the rich are getting richer by wrongfully taking from those with nothing. Due to this system, Robin gains the respect and support of the common people despite him being an outlaw because he is repeatedly taking from the rich and giving it back to the poor. The community support is possibly one of the biggest principles that is shown throughout the book, and is a main reason Robin is able to escape from the law. Being a well-made play, all is naturalistic and not overly dramatized. However, Ibsen makes use of features within the setting to subtly convey and emphasize the story and its messages. One such feature concerns the doors within the house. At the beginning, he describes four doors in the house: two at the back, and one on either side.…
