The Dome of the Rock is the Islamic shrine built over a sacred stone on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is one of the oldest Islamic monument still standing today. The Dome is the source of inspiration for other architecture, such as the New Synagogue in Berlin, the Moorish Revival in Budapest, the Mausoleum of Sultan Suleiman in Istanbul, Church of St. Giacomo in Italy, the Temple in Jerusalem.
The construction of the Dome of the Rock began in 687, and Islam originated in Mecca in the 7th century. Therefore, the Dome of the Rock has been a witness of the Islamic history with a lot of ups and downs. It has been through a number of historical stages: Omayyad, Abbasids and Fatimids, Crusaders, Ayyubids and Mamluks, Ottoman Empire and the present.
