The Dog Days Are Over Poem Analysis

In my English 30-1 course students such as myself were given the opportunity to select pieces of poetry that spoke to them. I personally chose the song “The Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and The Machine. The first time this song met my ears was when a friend plugged their iPhone into my truck speakers as we drove down a gravel road to our destination which was a campground. After listening politely as small rain drops began to fall on my windshield I was met with the questioning eyes of my friend on if I had enjoyed the song. As their eyes questioned my belief I was hit by a sudden truth the fact that I hadn’t enjoyed the song. I reluctantly admitted my position and the topic was quickly dropped as the rain started to harden against my windshield. …show more content…
It is the telltale line that makes the listener think that this song might be a love story however the next line tells us that this isn 't it. “She killed it with kisses and from it she fled” which suggests the abusive relationship that the woman remains caught in but even though she tries to love her partner by receiving his blows and repaying them with kisses she still can 't gain the love she stays desperately fighting for. The song further develops this idea as it progresses as in the line “Leave all your love and you’re longing behind” this line however also suggests at a shift in thinking from the main protagonist. At this point in the song she has realized that it is time to leave her partner because the threatening nature of the relationship has become too physically and mentally injustice for her to handle sanely this stays evident in “You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive”. “Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father, Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers” also hints at the change in her mind about the state of her relationship. That line stands as one of my favorite because it brings the family into the situation displaying that the women knows this affects them and that by leaving it will not only be the best for her but also the best for her family. I can relate to this deeply because I have had a person I love be in an abuses relationship and the effect on someone is huge. I watched them change from an outgoing, amazing and beautiful person to someone that had no confidence and cut off the people around them. At first the people around them didn 't know this was happening and it wasn 't until they had the strength to leave their partner that we knew what had been happening. I like this part of the song because i

The song is about a relationship in which she is trying to please her partner, to meet their expectation, but they are expecting too much from her. In the end, they ask too much - she is only human and there's only so much she can handle before she breaks. In the song, she sings, “I can bite my tongue, I can stay awake for days if that's what you want” she has to almost tiptoe around him to please him ultimately becoming someone who she is not. Throughout the song, she talks about how a woman has to impress a man to be with him, has to be perfect and meet his expectations and if she doesn't he breaks her down. The American writers following the end of the Civil War often feature situations where individuals face confrontations of various kinds. The confrontations that are included in nineteenth century American literature are important to examine because they allow the current reader, along with readers past, to become knowledgeable of the issues that were relevant and interesting at the time of their publication. The included confrontations need to be exposed. First, characters in literary fiction in the second half of the nineteenth century find themselves in confrontations with nature. A prime example of a confrontation between characters and nature occurs in Hamlin Garland’s story, “Under the Lion’s Paw”, when the Haskins family explains that their misfortunes were a result of ravaging grasshoppers.…

She knows that he’s cheating so in the end of the song she says, “Oh, maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats.” Their relationship is also falling apart because in the song it says, “Right now, he’s probably up behind her with a pool-stick, Showing her how to shoot a combo.” It shows the theme because the first quote is showing that their relationship isn’t very strong and that he’s not faithful to one girl and that he’s a cheater. She also took drastic measures to make sure that he doesn’t cheat again and that causes their relationship to fall apart more than it already is. The second quote depicts the theme that their relationship is falling apart because he’s showing another girl how to play pool and he’s also a player.…

The message the author is trying to convey is that the situations that all of these Vietnamese people went through were terrifying. For example, in the poem “One Engine”, “...Communists catch us fleeing, it’s a million times worse than staying at home” (87). The author uses the word fleeing instead of other words like escaping, and leaving because fleeing has a negative connotation, this makes the reader understand that Ha and her family did not leave by choice, but were forced out of there beloved country by enemies that would kill them, which makes the situation terrifying because they could die. Furthermore, in the poem “One Engine”, “Thailand is much farther on one engine. It was risky…” (87).…

The evident social issues in the texts above have been about the effects of colonisation and exploitation of the land by 'white Australians '. Issues raised include; the mining of land seen by aboriginals as destruction of sacred land, the modernisation of the Australian landscape away from the natural beauty described by the composer and the tragic fading away of the aboriginal culture after attempts to display a sense of conciliation. In the poem, 'Time Is Running Out ', the composer - Oodgeroo of the tribe NOONCCAL - highlights the taking of land to mine minerals in a destructive manner just for a greedy cause; usually money. This can be seen when the composer writes, ' In his greedy lust for power, He destroys old natures will.…
