In her essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, and Other Tales of Woe” Carolynn Segal expresses her intolerance of students turning in their assignments late with ridiculous excuses. Everyone more than likely has experienced life throwing something unexpected in his or her direction and not having time to complete that last minute homework that is due tomorrow. If I were a college professor, I would try my best to stay to strict deadlines, yet I would be understanding under certain circumstances. I would be willing to extend deadlines if I knew they were hardworking students or had a reasonable excuse with proof. I would not allow excuses from students whose procrastinating behavior has been a reoccurring issue. If a dedicated and diligent student comes to me as a teacher with an excuse I would be more willing to understand the situation. My willingness to …show more content…
As a professor, I would feel similar, yet I would accept an excuse from a student who offers actual proof of it being legitimate. Being a student I understand what it is like to be too busy or to have something happen that prevents me from completing a project on time, yet I also know what it is like to just procrastinate and try to convince one’s professor to allow some extra time. If I were a professor, I would support Segal’s point of view on this one. If a student tells me that they could not do the homework because they were sick, then I would expect a doctor’s note attached to the assignment when turned in late. My students should take my class seriously and not put their work on the back burner. Students that have family excuses for not turning in work are more willing to be understood, but Segal mentions students using friends, technology, and dorm life as excuses for not turning in work on time. I will not accept that unless students have some actual proof of technological error. Besides that, it is their responsibility to complete class
