The Docudrama “Black Orphan” Features the life story of Sumaira, A dark skin orphan girl, who had been subjected to racial discrimination on the basis of her skin colour. As a child, she had to witness a lot of rejection from parents who were seeking out child adoption, just because she was a “black child”.
Basic concept
The Basic concept of this Docudrama is to highlight to behaviors of our society; the state of being an orphan and racism associated when it comes to child adoption. It comes to no surprise that most part of our society suffers from a light-skin complex and tends to pursue people of darker skin tones in a rather negative way. Moreover, Ill treatments towards orphans have been recorded all over the world. Literary piece of writing, that acted as a “verification” for our theme was the book Orphaned by the colour of my skin: a stolen generation story, written by Mary Terszak, in which she shares her childhood story, where she suffered in orphanages and with the adoption process, due to the fact that she was fair skinned aboriginal girl in Australia (Terszak, M. (2015).
Since our docudrama revolves around the concept of a black orphan child, the next step in our research process was to look out for the lead character. This involved a lot of research on different orphanages of Pakistan. The few foundations which were contacted for this purpose included SOS Children’s Villages, Edhi Homes & Orphanages, Sirt ul Jannah Orphanages and Al-Khidmat foundation. At the end SOS was taken as the orphanage where most of our production work will been done, with Sumaira as the lead character and her doppelganger, which was a
