Although the doctrine of informed consent is a relatively recent, it governs the relationship between physicians and patients. The main purpose of informed consent is to promote human rights and dignity. My aim is to show that the doctrine of informed consent, as practiced in the relationships between physicians and patients, often does not fulfill its main purpose; i.e., it does not safeguard the interests, rights, and dignity of patients.
