Ernest Hemingway “The Doctors and Doctors Wife” expresses the idea that; sometimes people get angry at many different things and they end up dealing with them in totally different ways. There are three main instances that help explain this idea. The first aspect is when Dick gets very angry at the Doctor for stealing the wood. The second aspect is when the Doctor talks violently towards Dick and that creates tension between his wife and Dick. The final aspect would be when the Doctor starts feeling impulsiveness and resentment.
The first aspect is when Dick gets very angry at the Doctor for stealing the wood. The wood is one of the main objects that keeps this story line together and is keeping the arguments coming. The arguments begin when Dick says, “that’s a nice lot of timber you’ve stolen” (Hemingway 9). The Doctor then realizes that Dick is catching onto him with the whole wood thing. Dick understands what is going on and he ends up overusing the Doctor’s name to annoy him and the Doctor says, “If you call me Doc once again. I’ll knock your eye teeth down your throat” (10). This then creates tension between Dick and the Doctor. Then Dick gets angry at the Doctor for saying that the logs are stolen and Dick says, “Take your stuff and get out” (10). This thesis was being stated throughout the whole story, if you do something wrong or just get mad at someone in general, don’t take it out initially on the person you’re mad at. Deal with the anger in a different way, that won’t provoke anything else in the near future. Hemingway was trying to tell his readers, that when there is a problem in life take care of that issue immediately.
