Since Paolo Malatesta is silent, he does not want to say anything, but listening and crying. It seems he is in great pain. When we put ourselves in his situation, will we not be painful, not regret for we have done? Although Francesca and Paolo are suffering in same condition, their mental state is different. Paolo was killed by his own brother which is his family member who may love him before. When he is memorizing all these thing, he must be guilty and he may ask himself what I have done, he knew it is not a right thing to do. Dante put the people into the hell, I thought he will have countless resentment, and retaliate to every sinner virulently. He did wrote the punishments for sinners, but not only that, hell made Dante aware of his own sin. “And they did me an even greater honor, for they made me one of their band, so that I was sixth among so much wisdom (C4, 100-102).” When reading for the first time, I thought Dante is haughty man which he wanted to be equal popularity with the greatest poets. But after perusing a bit, I realized that Dante is a Christian, he must have the concept of hell that he should not proud of being in the hell. The character of Dante is self-described as rather weak, his will-power and his efforts to overcome the trials of his journey place him as greater than any common man. Narrator Dante to represent the struggle of the common man against sin. The first stated that he is traveling across territory that no one has crossed before, making his journey a very significant one. It is clear that Dante was special and selected to go through these trials, making him greater than everyone. His triumph in gaining heaven and returning to tell the story, make his journey a success.
