Summary: Diversity In The Classroom

Improved Essays
The diversities of learners with in a class room include gender, cultural, language, family, religious, and socioeconomic diversities. Along with these differences, students also have varying learning styles and some may have exceptionalities (Powell, 2015, pp.42-66). All of these factors lead to a diverse learning community. As a teacher it is important to be able to identify and address these diversities, in order to give students the best education possible. Diversity within the classroom provides students will a glimpse of the real world. I grew up in a school that was predominantly white and Christian, therefore when I moved off to college the diversity of the university came as a surprise. I had learned about the theory of multiple intelligences and learning styles before, but had never applied them to a classroom setting. Previously, I was under the assumption that the teacher taught and the students adjusted to their teaching style. After viewing each of these topics in a different light, I realized that it is the teacher’s job to do be the flexible one, and I now aspire to be an educator who teaches to all learning styles. I will give opportunities for my auditory learners to talk and listen, my visual learners to pair images with the information, my kinesthetic learners to demonstrate the information, and my tactile learners to use manipulatives to learn important concepts (Powell, 2015, pp. 57-59). Most importantly, I now understand that diversity is as important in my teaching style as it is in the demographics of my classroom. Diversifying my teaching style will not be problematic for me, because I enjoy trying various techniques. This will keep my learners engaged and excited for the next lesson. On the other hand, I will have difficulty relating to the socioeconomic and language diversity that might exist within my classroom. I have not had much experience working with people who are struggling financially or that speak another language than I do. After this semester I feel more prepared to work with these students, but I recognize I have …show more content…
For instant, this could be done through volunteering to tutor under privileged children. I would enjoy working with a program such as Project RISE to help homeless children stay in school and on the right track. Tutoring English-language learners would also help me to close this gap and would be rewarding. In the fall, I began working at the Polsky Tutoring Labs as a math tutor. I work with many students who are learning English as their second language. Assisting these students is a great experience which is helping me to close the gap in my knowledge of diversity. Furthermore, I need to research these particular diversities and what aid is available to these students. Above all, closing this gap in my understanding will give me the ability to better help all of my students reach their full

The overarching objective is to equip students with 21st century skills and a quest for lifelong learning (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2012, pp. 4, 5, 28). The challenge for teachers working at the crossroads of these varying discourses in the classroom is to translate the curriculum in a manner that places each student at the centre of teaching and learning in a encouraging and intellectually challenging manner. This paper will compare and contrast these various discourses within the Middle Years (Years 7 – 9) and Senior Years (Years 10 – 12) contexts.…

Diversity is a key element for a proper learning environment; students must be amongst people of other backgrounds to be exposed to the variation in the real world. In the scientific community, collaboration with others is necessary, and often, they come from an alternate way of life. Working with someone who may be different in many ways has numerous benefits; they may be able to propose ideas that you had not previously considered, or they could inform you of something that has the potential to assist you later in life. Living in a diverse setting not only an educational benefit, but it also aids in the preparation for the real world. We live in an extremely diverse location, with people immigrating from various places around the world.…

As my interviewees were explaining to me their opinions and views, I noticed a lot of connections between what they were saying and what I have learned or talked about in class. There is never a bad question when there are discussions in class, and the questions themselves are valued more than the answers. My professor uses a variety of teaching methods because each student has a Personal Learning Plan and different learning preferences. This is seen in our “What’s MY Style?” mini assignment from week one, where we learned about our personal metacognitions.…

One important characteristic as a learner that I have is that I love to talk to people, specifically people that are different than me, that can tell me a different story than what I have heard before. Although my demographic research does not necessarily show how I feel about the lack of diversity, it does show that there was a massive lack of diversity in my high school. Even though there was a lack of diversity, I still found myself interviewing four Korean students. These were possibly the only ones to have a drastically different story than me in my high school. The benefits of that interview have carried with me as shown by the MSLQ.…

Not all learning styles can fit into a specific situation, there are times when a kinesthetic style is better than an aural. By becoming proficient in all learning styles, I would become flexible in all learning situations. The student should be able to shift towards the professors teaching styles in addition to exceling in their learning environment. Now, I work the best with the aural, kinesthetic, and read/write learning styles, with the weakest like being the visual learning style. By taking the content learned to the next level by shifting it across learning styles, I would gain a greater understanding towards it.…

The reading by Kluth (2010) about the role of the teacher highlights the importance of an inclusive and non-discriminatory learning environment, which are contributing factors to a supportive and positive learning environment. The reading discusses the importance of recognising diversity. “Recognising, however, and doing our best to really understand how differences affect students ' lives and educational experiences, helps us to better know and serve each individual learner.” (Kluth, 2010, p.44). If the students in the classroom community are able to understand each other and how everyone comes from a different background and recognise diversity then it will help to preserve student dignity, which is another factor which Kluth (2010) states as important.…

Thus, diversity needs to be taken seriously by educators. It is the only way to make sure that students of all backgrounds are not excluded or marginalized due to their unique needs and learning styles, but are instead supported by the education system and receive an education that helps them reach their fullest potential.
