The Dangers Of Animal Experimentation

Across the world there are millions of animals being poked and prodded in an effort to keep up with the changing world around us. Since the beginning of medicine, vivisection, the act of surgery on a living animal in an attempt to gain knowledge, has shown diverse effects in the advancement of science. Throughout the years, animal experimentation has continued to gain criticism from many because of its harmful nature towards innocent animals. Despite its continued contributions to the birth of new cures and treatments, it has been proven that better alternative testing methods can be put in place. Rabbits are often one of the main victims of animal testing. Despite other available methods, a laboratory in North Carolina allowed workers to attach ticks to shaved rabbits for five days and repeated this process twice before killing the rabbit. Also, during the Draize Eye Irritancy Test, rabbits were subjected to various substances forced into their eyes often resulting in, “...swelling, discharge, ulceration, hemorrhaging, cloudiness, or blindness. The rabbits are killed after the experiment is over.” (“Rabbits in Laboratories”) Other methods besides animal testing have been proven to produce more stable results. Recent studies have shown using in vitro, in glass, experiments produce better results because it allows the use of human cells. Also, inducing a small enough dosage into a human without directly causing its effects and then studying their blood. Tests can also be run on artificial skin samples from companies like Epiderm and Thincert opposed to animal skin. (Animal Testing) In difference to the negative sides of vivisection, it has been proven to be beneficial towards science, humans, and animals, at times. Vivisection has been a popular issue within the world since it arose centuries ago. It has aided in the advancement of science and will probably continue to do so, but it is imperative for scientists to focus more on the well-being of their patients until they switch to the other alternatives
