The Distance Between Us Theme

The Distance Between Us successfully demonstrates the “family” theme. The theme gives readers a fully look of how the relationship of members in the family and life events in Reyna and her family changed after her father had left. I was born and raised in Hanoi, Vietnam. My family was a middle-class family. We used to live together with my grandparents’ house. The big family lived together in a house with six tiny rooms. It was very uncomfortable because there are different generations living under the same house. Even though we had to live in a tiny room that only had one bedroom and no kitchen, I was still happy about it. My father left when I was seven years old. At that time, the Internet was not popular as in the present, so I could not talk to my dad and see his face everyday. I asked him many times when he would be able to come back. All the answers I received were his silence and sign. When I saw my friends’ dads picked them up at school, I was so envy them. I wished my dad would surprise me and come to pick me up one day. I realized the more I expected him to come, the more I would be disappointed. My dad barely came back home because he was too busy with his work in Thailand during seven years. Whenever he came back home, he brought my mom and me many gifts that could never be found in Vietnam. I had many pretty clothes, new sets of school supplies, new shoes, and special stuff that I had never seen before.
