Cinderella patiently endures all kinds of abuse by her stepmother and stepsisters without any complaint. Her original name was actually Ella but one night after falling asleep next to the fire place while scrubbing the floors, she was mockingly called Cinder Ella by her step sisters and the nick name had stuck throughout the years. She waits around to be rescued by a prince charming, wishing hard for a change. Even the main song in the movie “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” states that if you wish hard enough, all of your dreams will come true by a stroke of luck. An underlying message is that the only work a woman is supposed to do should be in the household, instead of Cinderella working hard to make a change in her life situation and to get away from her evil step mother and sisters. Girls should be taught at a young age that they are very capable of being independent and shouldn’t expect things to just fall into your lap if you just wish, pray, and hope hard enough. They should be shown how to stand up for themselves when they‘re being mistreated by people rather than just putting up with it and suffering quietly. Relying on superficial or shallow things to make one happy doesn’t result in true happiness, beauty and wealth are only temporary and can both fade away with time. As wonderful as all the princess movies are and as these fairy tales are fun to day dream about, they aren’t realistic and put ideas in children’s heads of how they should obtain happiness and love, how they should be treated by people, and how they should deal with mistreatment. Happiness comes from within one’s self; if someone relies on somebody else for their happiness, then nobody will ever be truly
