There are more then 5 million people in America living with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic progressive illness that impairs cognitive ability and other motor functions. In 2015, it is estimated that 700,000 people in the United States will die with Alzheimer’s disease(CITE) Alzheimer’s disease is prevalent and cannot be cured. English singer and musician Ed Sheeran highlights the pain caused by Alzheimer’s disease in his song Afire Love. Additionally, Jean Watson’s theory of caring is emphasized in nursing and relevant to treating patients and family members including those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Afire Love at first may seem like a love song. However, when closely listening and analyzing the lyrics, one comes to find that this song is about the process and pain of losing a loved one to Alzheimer’s disease. Ed Sheeran wrote Afire Love about his grandfather who lived with Alzheimer’s disease for over twenty years and recounts his memories from a little kid to present about his grandfather’s disease. Additionally, Sheeran shows deep hatred for the disease writing that the “the devil took your memory”(Line 2). Sheeran remembers “that the doctors put your chest in pain but then that could have been the medicine”(line 5,6). Even as a little kid, Sheeran remembers the doctors and the effect of the medication on his grandfather. The song also highlights the emotional impact the disease had on Ed.
