Aurora Australis Essay

Have you ever wondered what those neon green lights are that appear on the cover of national geographic? It’s difficult to believe that those photos aren’t photo-shopped and they are a phenomenon of nature. These beauties are created by a mixture of magnetic and solar disturbances in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The fact that scientists to this day still haven’t completely explained this phenomenon is incredible. These lights are called Aurora. According to an article by N.S. Gill, the Aurora lights “were named by a French scientist Pierre Gassendi, in 1621. They were named Aurora for the goddess of the dawn, according to the Romans . . . (Gill)” When they occur at the North Pole they are called the Aurora Borealis, and at the South Pole they are called the Aurora Australis (How … work?). These lights have been studied for hundreds of years and scientists still haven’t been able to fully grasp this act of nature. According to HowStuffWorks.com, the colors that these lights give off is a something scientists have only recently figured-out. The …show more content…
They tend to occur at night between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. But, those hours are specific to the Iceland area (Dombrowski). In an area closer to the Poles, Auroras have been seen during the day. But those areas are harder to predict the time of occurrence for the reason that they occur so often. The main reason the Aurora is unpredictable in many areas is for the reason that the rotation of the sun and the activity of the solar winds on earth. The sun fully rotates every 27 days, for the sun to produce electrons and protons strong enough to be seen only happens once every 27 days. Alongside from the sun, the solar wind occurring has to be active enough for the winds to be seen. Predicting when the winds will be strong enough, while also predicting when the sun will produce strong enough protons and electrons is impossible for the technology we have today

1.Because of the Earths daily rotation it causes the sun to appear to rise in the east and set in the west so it creates a day and night so the moon relies on the sun to set and rise during a certain time in the hemisphere 2.The seasons result from the 23.5-degree tilt of the Earth's axis combined with its revolution around the sun 3.The Moon's and Sun's gravitational pulls on Earth are responsible for this natural phenomenon creating the tides. Tides occur because the Moon's gravity decreases with distance from the Moon. 4. Hi Kimberley, I enjoyed reading your thorough discussion post related to electronic health records as they related to small and rural hospitals (Adler-Milstein et al., 2015). To elaborate your point regarding the current state of the electronic health record, EHR, in the United States, network capabilities are often not consistent in the outreach clinics. Personally, I am amazed at the lack of capabilities some of the specialist outreach clinics encounter because of network capabilities. Your post reminded me of a recent specialist whose patients were unable to use a credit card for payment because of the inadequate network capability. References Adler-Milstein, J., DesRoches, C. Dead Again uses different lighting techniques to create dramatic contrast and a sense of mood in each scene. This is highlighted through the film noir scenes when dramatic high contrast was achieved by using two extremes of lighting, a lack of light and a heavy amount of light. This was especially shown in the opening interrogation scene. During the scene the light in the room was the only light source present and everything else was in complete darkness. In the scene the contrast was so strong that in order to be visible the actor playing Roman Strauss had to lean forward into the light source.…

As the Earth travels in its nearly circular orbit around the sun, it maintains a constant axial tilt of 23.4 degrees. This tilt causes the proximity of the northern and southern hemispheres of the globe to change during its annual trip around our local star. These changes in proximity and their impact on the amount of solar energy received by the northern and southern hemispheres are what causes the Earth to have seasons. As the incline of Earth’s axis brings the northern hemisphere closer to the sun during the planet’s revolution, the light of the sun falls more directly on the northern latitudes of the Earth.…
