Social campaigns are cultural texts which produce and challenge established meanings, values, identities, practices, and social structures like the ways of knowing, seeing, and being, and what could say. The purpose of this essay is to identify and analyse the discourse that are central to a social campaign and discuss the socio-political effects the campaign produces. This essay will be analysing a social issues campaigns which is related to against racism which created by Australian Human rights commission and analyses three different media it used as part of the campaign including a poster, video and a song. People usually bring their thought and concept into this poster when they seeing it. ‘The term “discourse” refers not to language or social interaction but to relatively well-bounded areas of social knowledge (McHoul 1993, p.31)’. In other words, ‘it is a set of recurring statements that define a particular cultural object like madness, criminality and sexuality and provide the concepts and terms through which such an object can be studied and discussed (Cavallaro 2001, p. 90).’ It gave people the concept of what can do and what cannot do and who has the right to do it. In many situations, people would expect the response of other people. For example, people think doctors are professional so they expect them to behave in certain way like people would expect a doctor is nice and act professional instead of saying many bad words when they are seeing a patient. Even though people’s outside appearance is different like hair colour and skin colour are different but people are all the same. They should not identify people by their race as a person who has an Asian looking can born in Australian and share the same culture so people should not judge people by their look and race. In addition, all people are the same and equal, this is the concept that this song want to bring out. It is very important that people are not being racism as habit because habit could be easily created by a kind of interplay between two or over time although it is not neither free will’s result nor structures determined it. Also, its dispositions that are both shaped by past events and structures, and that shape current practices and structures and also, importantly, that condition people’s very perceptions of these.
‘A cultural field can be defined as a series of institutions, rules, rituals, conventions, categories, designations, appointments, and titles which constitute a hierarchy and which produce and authorize certain discourses and activities (Webb, Schirato & Danaher 2002, p.21)’. This is the reason of why people have different standard of seeing things and some people believe racism does not matter but racism is certainly not acceptable in any culture.
