In the year of 1585, 107 settlers landed on Roanoke land. They were planning to establish a colony with John White as the leader and governor Ralph Lane.As they began exploring the country, their abundance of food and supplies slowly diminished and John white saw that he had to go back to the homeland, England.He told his men that if anything went wrong, they were to carve signals on a tree indicating what they were going to do. When John White came back from the grueling three year journey to England and back, he found nothing left of the great colony established. The only remain to ever indicate the settlers were ever there was a tree with the word “CROATOAN” carved into it.
